[ToAU] Project Part 2: Analysing and Theorising Architecture

The subject emphasises architecture as a language with vocabulary, grammatical structure; both physical and intellectual. In other words, it carries messages and communicates meanings. In Part 2, Theories of chosen architects are analysed and applied to a given area of study in a 2000 word essay accompanied by diagrammatic boards.

With the completion of this project, I have understood that not all urban theory, whether modern or ancient, can be implemented in every city. The application depends on certain factors that would make it appropriate or otherwise.

[ToAU] Project Part 1: Analysing Self

This project asks students to select a defined area and see it “through the eyes” of one architect, urban designer or theoretician that was discussed in the lecture series. Students are asked to apply or translate design theories and historic urban design approaches onto this area using the chosen architect's theory. The application and translation were done through a graphical language and sketch design as well as a short reflective text of around 500 words.

Through this project, I have learnt to produce critical analysis of architecture and urbanism in relation to relevant theories within the contemporary discourse of architecture.

[ToAU] Architecture Reading and Synopsis

Theories of Architecture and Urbanism

Main subject of studies in this module is the thematic inquiry into broader architectural theories from different philosophical school of thought, period or era, and different exposure of cultural and social condition from different places.
Different theories included :
Modernism
Postmodernism
Phenomonology
Semiotics
Post Structuralis

Deconstructivism

Architecture Reading and Synopsis
From the study of these theories, is to have basis of understanding to analyse and examine specific cases and issues in modern architecture. This module include reading and in-depth analytical research paper on specific topic and theories, also analysis and generation of own theories from real life interview of modern days architect based on their work and philosophical thinking.

[ACH2] Project 2: Web Book (Group & Individual)

Project 2 is about applying the knowledge in Malaysian context. Once again we're in a same group of 5 from project 1. From there we were assigned a Modern building in Kuala Lumpur for the research. In the end of the project we're to produce and compile every single detail of the information of given/researched based on our knowledge into a web book.

The building chosen is the historical Telekom Museum building.

[ACH2] Project 1: Precedent Studies (Group & Individual)

Project 1 was a group and individual work where we were assigned to pick an architect and his building to work on precedent studies. We picked the architect Le Corbusier and The Crown Hall for his building.

From this project, I have learnt to increase understanding on the principle, idea and contributing factors of the architecture of Le Corbusier. I have also gained the ability to analyse and identify specific architectural features in term of space planning, technology, details, form and the aesthetics of Le Corbusier.

[Studio4] Project 2: Nature Appreciation Centre

This project contains two parts that calls for a design solutions harnessing environmental qualities and conditions for human and environment sustainability. The first part was design analysis whereby the process of understanding the site was carried out. Once a thorough site investigation and analysis were done, the design and problem solving task was carried out which finally lead to the design of the individual Nature Appreciation Center. The project requires the exploration of design solutions that reduce environmental impact utilising clustered spatial typology and passive design approach which should merge harmoniously with nature and the site, and provide the best experiences for the community of users.

The requirement of the Nature Appreciation Center was designed based on the following requirements:

Site : Pulau Banding, Gerik, Perak
Brief : Nature Appreciation Center
Building Siting : Setbacks as per authority requirements (where applicable)
Building Height : 2 - 3 Storeys.
Approximate Floor Area : 800 sq m. (with the possibility to expand)
Facilities : To provide a Mixed-Use Facility to accommodate:
A. Communal / Meeting Hall (100 pax )
B. Information Area (200 sq m)
C. Learning Spaces (100 sq m)
D. Refreshment Area (30 pax + kitchen)
Vehicle : Access and Parking
Occupants : Consideration for disabled (wheelchair) access
Public Access : Consideration to the Public/Private accesses and separation
Pedestrian Circulation : Consideration of the pedestrian accesses into and around the Site.

Other service facilities to be provided as required

[Studio4] Project 1 : Green Info-Shelter: Exploring the Environment Poetics

Project 1 explores the environmental poetics of a structure that respond to the basic natural context such as the sun, wind, heat, cold, energy issue, and the existing context by designing a small green info-shelter within an open area, applying ideas of environmental sustainability in architectural design as well as considering user comfort.

The green info-shelter was designed based on the following requirements:

1) Volume 3m x 3m x 3m (max)
2) To serve the main purpose of providing info on events and activities in CODA, SABD
3) To provide shelter for students waiting for pick up (5 max)
4) Minimal area for storage/ services
